Malka Roth

Malka Roth is an educator, community herbalist, organizer and co-founder of the DC Mutual Aid Apothecary. She organizes locally in DC and in the national landscape specifically on work for narrative change. She spent over a year researching the closure of the farm/nonprofit Movement Ground Farm, weaving together the story of this decade-long organization into a virtual interactive timeline exploring what happened as the organization attempted to shift into a worker-led nonprofit and ultimately decided to sunset. Her work serves as a case study, offering in-depth qualitative research for those moving towards land-based work. She is deeply and personally invested in the question of how we build collective, land-based projects toward liberation, what we can learn from those that have shut their doors, and how grief plays a role in what we believe is possible. She spent this past spring teaching a research class at Georgetown University, exploring the same themes of urban agriculture and project closures.

Malka has been managing RadComms’ narrative research over the past year, working closely on the recently released digital magazine Rising Narratives for Radical Futures and establishing the Radical Futures Lab, a place for movements to experiment with building narrative power for the left through creative research and on the ground tests.

Malka’s work is profoundly influenced by her commitment to abolition, her queer and Jewish identities, and an enduring conviction that new worlds are possible.
