In 1992, the state of Colorado let voters decide to whether to discriminate against LGBTQ individuals by proposing Amendment 2, a law that would prohibit the state from enforcing anti-discrimination protections on the basis of sexual orientation. Voters passed it and earned Colorado the moniker “hate state” in certain circles.
More than 30 years later, hate is back on the ballot in Colorado. Voters in next week’s election will decide state propositions 134 and 135, which seek to ban healthcare for trans youth as well as their participation in organized sports.
In this episode, Ann Marie Awad joins us to discuss, Hate State, their new podcast series that explores the history of LGBTQ discrimination in Colorado, going back to Amendment 2. The podcast also explores the intersection of that history with today’s efforts to discriminate against trans children. It digs into the background of these new propositions and looks at how this type of discrimination has become so mainstream again.
Hate State is a production of Odd Bird Sound & Word and LOOKOUT News.
