Samir Shrestha

Samir was born in Nepal during the struggle to abolish monarchy and belongs to the Indigenous Newar tribe. His working class parents were politically involved but his father was a specific influence on his understanding of the conditions of his people in Nepal. Dinesh, often a target of political persecution, exposed Samir to the importance of organizing communities against systems of oppression at a very young age. He grew up spending time in the streets and in organizing meetings with his father who he considers his most important mentor.

Samir moved to the bay in late 2008 and has spent the last 18 years supporting movement work in the bay and nationally. As an Indigenous Newari person living in the diaspora, Samir understands the limitations of his analysis on Nepal and spends a lot of time reflecting on what it truly means to be in solidarity with our peoples back home.

Samir enjoys cooking, reading, watching sports, and nerding out on the intersection of sports and politics.
