We spoke with officers and staffers from a variety of unions and we drew on many conversations over the years with struggling reformers. Some had more regrets and mistakes to report than victories; others are still in office and eager for the next challenge. Without pretending any of the answers are easy, here are some lessons about how reformers can change the culture and put the union on an organizing footing.
